Body, mind and soul. They are undeniably interconnected and their conditions are dependent on one another. A healthy body is not a requirement for faith and intimacy with God, but I’ve found in my experience that when I care for the basic needs of my body, my spiritual life flourishes. What we eat, whether or not we exercise, and what we do in our free time can all help or hinder our relationship with the Lord. I can say with confidence from a God-given place of wholeness in Christ, there is a very real tie between my physical wellness and the state of my soul.

I discovered this week that May is National Bike Month! Conveniently, I have just moved to a town where biking is convenient and enjoyable. In the past week, I’ve biked to my favorite little market in Cardiff, the grocery store, my job interview at lululemon, and one of my new fave local coffee shops.
It’s an exciting and enjoyable thing to get from one place to another without using any energy but my own oxygen and muscles. I’ve mastered some huge hills that I thought I would never be able to climb, and experienced the great reward of speeding downhill afterward. The feelings of breeze in my face and a good burn in my legs put biking at the top of my list of favorite things this month.
To encourage you to take advantage of the rest of National Bike Month, as well as discover the joy of biking over driving, here are some of the top benefits of cycling for health, transportation, or leisure:
Health
Cycling minimizes the risk of coronary heart disease.
It tones the muscles in your lower body.
It builds endurance.
It’s an easy way to exercise without spending a single moment in the gym.
It alleviates stress and anxiety.
Transportation.
Cycling is environmentally friendly activity that lets out no harmful chemicals in the air. All you need is your body!
No need to find or pay for parking—bikes save money.
Bicycling can help to reduce roadway congestion.
Many of the trips that Americans make every day are short enough to be accomplished on a bicycle (The 1995 National Personal Transportation Survey found that approximately 40 percent of all trips are less than two miles in length-which represents about a 10-minute bike ride.)
A short, four-mile round trip by bicycle keeps about 15 pounds of pollutants out of the air we breathe (WorldWatch Institute).
Leisure
Cycling gives you the opportunity to spend time with friends.
Since you can sightsee more easily by bike than by car, it’s a fun way discover new places near your house.
Tomorrow (May 21) is officially Bike to Work day, and while I have no job, I will take on that challenge and bike around town with my roomie and bestie Becca.
